What is a periodontist?

A periodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases that affect the gums and bone around teeth. Periodontists undergo additional years of specialized education and training beyond dental school to become experts in managing conditions such as gum disease, gum recession, periodontal disease, and placement of dental implants.

In addition to the specialty training, Dr. Joan Nagatomo is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, and practices as a board-certified periodontist.
